May 10, 2017 (Koror, Palau) Koror State Government Solid Waste Management Recycling Fund continues its 3R campaign, promoting recycling, re-using and reducing waste by awarding top five local families that recycle beverage containers in the last 2 months. [restrict]
President Tommy Remengesau Jr. along with members Koror State legislature and community members, awarded family that had the highest number of containers recycled.
Winner Huana Pedro, recycled 6,548 containers worth $1,454.35 dollars. As the winner of this recycling promotion, she won $1,000 cash prize.
Estephen Kintaro recycled 3,976 containers worth 1,436.20 and won $500 cash for his effort. 3rd place winner was Carlton Crospy collecting containers worth $1,108.55 and won a prize of $250 dollars. Kukumai Ngemaes, a 4th place winner with containers worth 964.85 dollars received a glass craft as prize. Last but least, the 5th place winner won grade A compost, by recycling $325.10 worth of containers.
There were 30 participants in this recycling contest and total containers recycled were 153,549.
Noted as one of the accomplishments, President Tommy Remengesau reported that Palau has the best solid waste management and recycling program in the Pacific region at national leadership meeting on May 9.
KSG SWM Recycling Fund is a Koror State Government project that implements Palau’s container recycling law and buys recyclable containers from private individuals and gets reimbursement from the national government. The program brings in about a quarter of million dollars in revenue to Koror State government each year. [/restrict]
