Taiwan on high alert for ASF

Taiwan ramps up efforts to block the African Swine Fever (ASF), which is currently spreading widely through Mainland China.

ASF is an acute and highly contagious disease for pigs. While ASF is not zoonosis, it has currently no cure or vaccine. Once it spread into a country, its pork industry will suffer tremendous loss.

Passengers who plan to visit Taiwan are cautioned not to bring in meat or meat products from other countries and were urged to obey three “don’ts”: don’t bring in meat or meat products from other countries, don’t order meat or meat products online and send to Taiwan, and don’t visit animal farms when travelling abroad.

Violators can be fined up to NTD 1 million. Those who import, mail order, or smuggle meat products into Taiwan illegally face up to 7-year jail time or up to NTD 3 million penalty.

For more information of Taiwan’s regulations and measures on ASF, please visit the website of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, Council of Agriculture at http://asf.baphiq.gov.tw/. (PR)
