Taiwan did little to Kiribati: President Maamau

TARAWA, 09 OCTOBER 2019 (RADIO KIRIBATI) — Kiribati President Taneti Maamau has said the switch from Taiwan to China was necessary for the long-term benefit and development of the country.

Maamau said the sudden switch may come as a shock to the people of Kiribati but it was the right time to do so because Taiwan has done little to speed up the country’s development and achieve its Kiribati Vision for 20 Years (KV20).

“We’ve had many proposals to Taiwan to help foster more benefits we’d want for our people but surprisingly Taiwan has always turned them down. The way we look at, Taiwan wants us to develop or grow little by little. That’s how I and the Government sees it and Taiwan Government knows it,” President Maamau told reporters.

“I told Taiwan, since you haven’t helped us enough with our plans, there will come a time when you’ll be surprised that we’ll seek help from another government that you will know, who will be willing to help us.

President Maamau said the switch’s time-frame was done transparently because it provided the people of Kiribati with enough time to decide for themselves before the general elections early next year. (PACNEWS)
