Suspect of fatal car crash in Hawaii charged with manslaughter

A young Palauan man, Alins Sumang, who is a suspect in a drunk driving incident in Hawaii that killed three people and injured five more, has been charged with three counts of manslaughter and his bail set at $1 million dollars.  Manslaughter is a class A felony carrying a 20 year sentence.

On January 29th Sumang allegedly drove his pickup truck into a busy crosswalk in front of Kamakee Street in Honolulu, Hawaii hitting pedestrians and bicyclist.  Three people died at the scene while five were seriously injured including Sumang himself.

According to Honolulu police reports, suspect may have been intoxicated and was speeding when his truck veered over the island unto the crosswalk hitting the people.  The three fatalities include a Hawaii doctor, two tourists, Japanese lady and young American man.

The tragic incident have impacted the victims’ families in Hawaii as well as the suspect’s family in Palau.  There has been an increase in anti-Micronesian sentiment in Hawaii against Micronesians and Palauans as the suspect’s nationality was reported.
