Suspect in fatal car crash nabbed
A 25-year-old female linked to a car accident that resulted into the death of another young female was arrested by the authorities at the Roman Tmetuchl International Airport after she allegedly fled from the scene on November 30 evening.
Based on the police report, the car driven by the 25-year-old female (name not divulged as investigation is still in progress) and another car driven by Yoshiwo Mengloi, 20, with passenger Chantel Meltel, 19, were heading from opposite direction when they collided into each other along the road in Ngeruluobel, Airai.
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) reported that they received a call at around 11pm, notifying them of the incident which prompted them to immediately respond to the scene.
Responding officers found 19-year-old Meltel already lifeless after she succumbed to injuries while her companion, Mengloi, who was found conscious after sustaining wounds from the incident, immediately received first aid treatment. They were then brought to the hospital after their retrieval from the vehicle.
The police found that the other car driven by the 25-year old was already empty, leading them to conduct a manhunt operation.
Authorities said that while they were on the lookout for the fleeing person, a caller phoned the patrol office and reported that the suspect was already at the airport and was set to leave the country for an early flight on December 1. She was reportedly originally scheduled for a trip to Japan to attend a certain program.
The 25-year-old female was then brought to the CID office for interrogation after she was arrested.
The CID is still conducting further investigation on the case. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
