Restoration of PICRC’s facilities and equipment successfully completed

The month long restoration project for Palau International Coral Reef Centers (PICRC) facilities and equipment has reached completion. The restoration project was supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and led by Nanyo Boeki Kaisha, (NBK) Corporation.  NBK is a trading company based out of Japan with a mission to make sustainable development for a better future. Koei Research & Consulting Inc. (KRC), an environmentally conscious consulting firm, was contracted to do the installation. [restrict]

On Friday, August 25th, Mr. Nobuaki Miyata, JICA Resident Representative, Ms. Mingrang Kloulechad, Acting CEO and Director of Administration, Ms. Geraldine Rengiil, Director of Research and Aquarium, and Mr. Asap Bukurrou, Chief Aquarist inspected the completed restoration work.  The restoration team also presented their recommendations to PICRC on the maintenance plan and follow up actions.

The restoration included the addition of new energy efficient lighting for aquarium tanks and new efficient filtration systems, which will alleviate the aquariums main filter and improve water clarity. The team also installed replacement tanks, and repaired the aquariums large outer reef tank.  Additionally, the restoration included the installation of automatic control panels for the generator to prevent any disruption in aquarium functions and research experiments should there be a power outage. PICRC aquarium staff worked hard alongside contractors from Japan for four weeks to learn maintenance of the new installations and to ensure the project was completed smoothly and timely.

PICRC is grateful to JICA and the government of Japan for supporting the restoration efforts, as well as the consultant teams that implemented the restoration.   With these new upgrades, PICRC will now focus on improvements to the aquarium displays in the coming months. [/restrict]
