President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. has issued a presidential proclamation declaring October 10 as the national mental health day in Palau in support of the worldwide observance of mental health day themed “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World.”
In his presidential proclamation dated October 8, Remengesau encourages parents and teachers in helping the youth develop life skills among young people that will help them cope with their everyday challenges.
Remengesau also stressed the need for the communities and schools to provide psychosocial support and also for health workers to be trained in detecting and managing mental health disorders
“We must all advocate for the promotion of mental health wellness by practicing the principles of prevention which begins with being aware of and understanding the early warning signs and symptoms of mental illness,” the proclamation reads.
Remengesau also emphasized the need to address social stigma associated with mental health issues. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
