September 4, 2017 (Koror, Palau) A report from Radio New Zealand in the news this week stated that President Remengesau was not joining the 48th Pacific Island Leaders Forum because he was travelling to Japan to discuss security issues with U.S. Allies. [restrict]
Office of the President refuted this report stating that Remengesau was in Japan by invitation of a Japanese religious organization (Kurakara) that helped build two WWII monuments in Peleliu honoring those that lost their lives in the war.
It also reported that Remengesau was there to promote “people-to-people” exchanges in his meetings with various groups in Japan.
Vice President Raynold Oilouch represented President Remengesau to the 48th Pacific Leaders Forum held in Apia, Samoa. The meeting is themed “The Blue Pacific: Our Sea of Islands-Our Security through sustainable development, management and conservation”
Couple of the key issues Vice President Oilouch will address on behalf of Palau include maritime surveillance to combat IUU and achievement goal #14 of UN Development Goals Oceans Management.
The Leaders Forum will officially open on September 8 and preceding that, meeting of Small Island States will take place. [/restrict]
