PICRC’s theme for the 17th Anniversary is, “People First through Conservation”
On January 18, 2018, Palau International Coral Reef Center will turn 17 years old. As is the tradition for the Center, each year, a theme is selected for the anniversary that reflects the organization’s core values and believes. For the 17th Anniversary, the Center selected the theme, “People First through Conservation”. Another tradition for PICRC is the Anniversary Fundraising Dinner Gala to celebrate its establishment. This year, the 17th Anniversary Fundraising Dinner Gala, will be held on January 18, 2018, at PICRC grounds. [restrict]
Palauans have always approached conservation of natural resources and protection of our environment with people in mind. The theme for PICRC’s 17th Anniversary is a reminder to us that at the end of the day, conservation is about people. For generations, Palauans have depended on the ocean and coral reefs. Conservation and management of these resources practiced by our ancestors was done so that we can benefit from these resources today. We too persevere to conserve and manage these resources so that they can continue to provide for future generations.
Palau International Coral Reef Center was established to guide efforts supporting coral reef stewardship through research and its applications for the people of Palau. PICRC has continued to be guided by this mission and the concept “conservation for the welfare of people”. The research conducted by PICRC is designed to preserve ecological and cultural balance. From monitoring fish stocks and assessing protected areas, to building capacity among the community, PICRC’s work centralizes around people.
