PICRC meets with members of the House of Delegates to discuss conservation priorities
On Tuesday morning, May 23, the Palau International Coral Reef Center(PICRC) held a meeting with members of the House of Delegates. Present at the meeting were, the Floor Leader of the House of Delegates, Mr. Gibson Kanai, Delegate Sebastian Marino, Delegate Mengkur Rechelulk, and Delegate Yutaka Gibbons, Jr. PICRC was represented by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Noah Idechong, and the CEO Dr. Yimnang Golbuu. The purpose of this meeting was to open a dialogue between policy makers and PICRC to discuss policy management priorities and concerns. This meeting also served as a prelude to an upcoming meeting that will address the research being conducted by PICRC. Following the meeting the delegates were given a brief tour of the Aquarium and the new Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. Building with Chief Aquarist, Asap Bukurrou.
This will be one of many meetings to consult and engage policy makers to ensure conservation issues and concerns are prioritized and research is being conducted accordingly.
“On behalf of the Palau International Coral Reef Center, its Board Members, and staff, I would like to thank the Speaker of the House of Delegates, Mr. Sabino Anastacio, Vice Speaker Florencio Ngiraiwet, the Chairman of Ways and Means Delegate Jonathan “Cio” Isechal, and the members from the House of Delegates of the 10th Olbiil er a Kelulau for their support of the $50,000 appropriation towards the PICRC Endowment Program,” Chairman Noah Idechong expressed during the meeting on Tuesday, “I would also like to thank Floor Leader Kanai and your fellow Delegates for coming to the Center and discussing issues and matters involving both our parties”.
PICRC was established as a semi-governmental organization to provide scientific data to policy makers and practitioners to make informed decisions regarding management and conservation of marine resources. It is critical that the Center has active engagement with these partners to ensure that the Center continues to be a worthwhile investment for the people of Palau. [/restrict]
