[restrict] The new theme for this school year art contest is “Taro Fields Protect Coral Reefs“. With this theme, PICRC hopes to raise the public awareness on taro fields vital role in buffering coral reefs from land sediments. The presentation will help students understand the role of taro fields in mitigating environmental degradation of coastal marine environment base on a research study conducted by PICRC in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Belau National Museum (BNM) and PALARIS.
Every year, PICRC presents a new theme for the annual art contest to all schools in Palau. The goal for this annual art contest is to create an appreciation for coral reefs and associated resources among the students and to raise public awareness about Palau’s coral reefs and marine environment through the art work by students.
PICRC would like to encourage more school participation in the 2018 Arts and Tides Calendar art contest this school year. For the past school year, 17 out of the 18 elementary schools and 5 out of the 6 high schools participated in the art contest. Total of 44% of the FY2016-17 school enrollment in Palau participated in the past art contest.
