Palau’s Organizing Committee for the Our Ocean 2020 is partnering with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in the planning for the biggest regional conference the country is going to host.
Media Focal Point for the Our Ocean Palau Planning and Implementation Committee Olkeriil Kazuo said that engineers from the UNOPS, the United Nations’ operational arm, had visited Palau earlier this month to conduct site visits and assessments for a week.
UNOPS previously signed the agreement with the Organizing Committee on June 27, 2019 to help advance the plans for the event.
Kazuo said that they are now working on the design, renovation, and eventual construction of the necessary infrastructures for each venue, especially the Palau National Gym which will be utilized for the plenary session of the conference.
The renovations for the national gym will also be done in such a way that will make it a multi-purpose center for the people of Palau post-Our Ocean 2020.
Kazuo said that Palau is initially looking at over 500 participants who will join the event but that it is also likely that they will get more delegations depending on the venue capacity.
The Organizing Committee along with the UNOPS will also develop an official website to be able to easily communicate all information pertaining to Palau’s hosting of the conference next year.
Kazuo said that hosting the conference means so much for Palau especially that the nation is known for leading efforts in ocean conservation. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
