President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. said that Palau is partnering with Taiwan for the plan to construct a convention center in Melekeok State to be able to provide a venue for Palau’s hosting of Our Ocean 2020.
Remengesau, during a press conference on Wednesday, November 7, said that the event is expected to have a big number of participants especially that the conference is not only intended for governments but also for non-government organizations and civil societies who will conduct their own invitations and host their own functions and plenary sessions.
“Representatives of the youth from different countries are coming [and] they will also need some venue to have plenary session,” Remengesau said, adding that this means every space in Palau will be utilized for the event.
Remengesau also said that he had asked some of the hotels currently being built in the country for a possibility of having a soft opening by 2020 to provide rooms for participants.
Remengesau, together with Palauan delegations, is set to leave the country this week for his first official state visit to Taiwan. One of the agenda of the meeting is to discuss collaboration for Palau’s hosting of the Our Ocean Conference in 2020. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
