Palau leads panel discussion on oceans in New York
Palau, as Chair of the Board of the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) hosted a panel discussion on fostering partnerships to support implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal on Oceans (SDG14). [restrict]
According to a statement from GLISPA, the panel discussions was part of Oceans Conference Preparatory meeting at United Nations Headquarters in New York City held from Feb. 15 to 16.

Palau National Marine Sanctuary Executive Director, Keobel Sakuma was one of the attendees of the discussion where he highlighted the partnerships Palau had forged with several groups to protect the ocean and marine resources.
He said that among those partnership were the Micronesia Challenge, the Palau Shark Sanctuary and the Palau National Marine Sanctuary.
“GLISPA has been essential to this process of identifying which partners are best-suited to help us reach our goals,” Sakuma was quoted as saying during the meeting.
Ambassador-Designate to the United Nations Olai Uludong, meanwhile chaired a members’ meeting , to share the partnership goals and priorities to 2020 including the SDG14 Oceans Conference as well as allow members to share their goals and priorities to 2020 related to island resilience, oceans and SDGs.
Members highlighted their priorities for the SDG 14 Conference including the issue of financing ocean implementation, indicator development and the engagement of islands in this process including forging new alliances, the statement added.
The Ocean Conference will be held from 5-9 June 2017 in New York City.
Fiji and Sweden are co-hosting the Oceans Conference.
