May 18, 2017 (Koror, Palau) National Emergency Committee(NEC) and National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) have placed Palau under an “EL NINO” watch, announcing that Palau has 65% chance of experiencing Severe Drought Conditions by August of this year. [restrict]

Palau National Weather Service report that global weather monitoring stations indicate a strong possibility of drought similar to what Palau experienced in 2016 but also indicate that this may last up to 10 months.

El Nino brings extreme dry conditions (drought) with very little scattered rainfall to the Republic of Palau and it is predicted that expected rainfall from August 2017 to April 2018 will not be enough to maintain water levels at the two main water sources, Ngerimel and Ngerikiil.

PPUC CEO Kione Isechal, in his report to Belau Tourism Association, stated that PPUC has been preparation for possible drought.

“We’ve learned our lesson the hard way from the last event and we are going to prepare for a drought regardless ,” emphasize Isechal.

“The water improvement project significantly improves our status should a drought like the one we recently experience occurred. The improvement in the pipes and water distribution system will ensure less loss due to leaks, which means we will retain more water that can be distributed,” added CEO Isechal.

In addition, Isechal reported that they’ve put together a request for qualification to get experts to come now and assist in identifying more water sources, especially those closer to water distribution system that can be tapped for emergency water uses.

Also, he stated that improvements to outlying states water systems are on-going and in the event of a drought, Palau would be in much better position than it was last year.

NEC and NEMO advise the public to practice water conservation measures in residences , private and government. [/restrict]
