Athletes participating in the on-going Micronesian Games held in Yap had been issued an alert cautioning them of the Little Fire Ants.
Little Fire Ants are considered as aggressive invasive species whose sting could last for a week. Though tiny, Little Fire Ants could pose threats to agriculture as it would infest an area, damaging crops and driving farmers away from farms for fear of being sting.
“LFA live in both the soil and vegetation and will readily invade houses and vehicles. LFA if permitted to establish, will drive out other animals and even people because of their aggressive nature and painful stings.,” the alert stated.
In a statement sent by Press Secretary Olkeriil Kazuo to the media, he said that Team Palau is taking all the necessary precautions.
Kazuo said that they had also already notified Palau’s Bureau of Agriculture on the matter and necessary quarantine protocols will be conducted to Team Palau once they return here. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
