The Koror-Side Family Park was formally handed over to the Koror State Government (KSG) from the Palau National Government on September 6, 2019.
The construction of the $730,000 park was funded by Palau stimulus grants assistance from the Republic of China – Taiwan through three construction phases beginning in 2013.
The Koror-Side Family Park includes a kids’ playground, a concrete gazebo, four picnic shelters, a swimming pier, water slide, two swimming pontoons, grilling stations, a free standing outdoor multi-shower, park benches, and a shower/restroom facility.
Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Baklai Temengil-Chilton with Taiwan Ambassador H.E. Wallace Chow carried out the ceremonial hand-over of the park to Koror State Governor Franco Gibbons at the ceremony attended by Palau’s traditional Chiefs and officials from the National and Koror State Governments.
“We thank the people and government of the Republic of China Taiwan for their support and for funding this truly valuable community project and I thank the Koror State Government and the Koror State Public Lands Authority for all their support in making this project possible. This park continues to serve the people of Koror and all the people of Palau including our valued visitors that come here to relax and have fun. On behalf of President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr., thank you very much.” Said Minister Temengil-Chilton.
H.E. Ambassador Wallace Chow who frequents the park often expressed his sentiments of the gratifying value of the project. “Coming to the park to snorkel and swim and for the magnificent sunsets, and to see families enjoy and hear the laughter of children – this is what I want to see. A small project like this can benefit a lot of people, and make them happy,” Ambassador Chow remarked. “I want to thank the government of Palau for making good use of Taiwan’s stimulus funds for the benefit of all the people in Palau and the visitors who come here,” Ambassador Chow added.
Koror State Governor Franco Gibbons in his remarks thanked the Office of the President and the Government of Taiwan for envisioning the Koror Side Family Park. He expressed his own memories of the park when he was a boy – swimming with no water slide but swinging of the trees. “It is projects like these that have great meaning to the people. This park is not only a benefit to the people of Koror but to all of the people of Palau. I thank the government of Taiwan for funding this project and the foresight of good leadership from President Remengesau.” Governor Gibbons said.
The Koror Side Family Park hosts nearly a thousand people every weekend and is now a prime venue for hosting public and private gatherings.
