Japan Hands Over Two Fire Trucks to Angaur State

In Friday, August 26, 2016, Ambassador of Japan Kazuhiro Tajiri formally handed over two fire trucks to Angaur State. The handing over ceremony for “The Project for Procurement of Fire Trucks to Angaur State”, which was held at Fisheries Dock in Malakal, was witnessed by Ucherbelau, Governor Marvin Ngirutang, Delegate Mario Gulibert, and the people of Angaur. The two refurbished fire trucks were granted to Angaur State, at a total cost of $89,996, through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Fires have been a serious issue for Angaur State. The recent draught caused bushfires around the island and several houses were burnt down in fires. Since the state did not own any fire truck, all the villagers had to battle to stop fires, but the capacity to extinguish a fire by human power was limited. Thus, the two donated fire trucks will now enable Angaur State to have a safe and reliable means to fight against a fire.

The fire trucks could be used not only for extinguishing fires, but also as water tanks that enable Angaur residents to have access to water in case of emergencies. Both fire trucks have tanks on their back and one fire truck has a capacity to carry approximately 400 gallons of water while the other has a capacity of 800 gallons, which allow to carry around 1,200 gallons of water in total.

As part of the project, a week-long training will be conducted in Angaur in November to instruct the usage and maintenance of fire trucks from a Japanese firefighter. As an outcome of this project, the fire trucks will be used efficiently to stop the fire to its minimum damage and to ensure a safe environment for the people of Angaur.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Ambassador Tajiri expressed his hope that this project will contribute to secure the safety of Angaur residents and will lead to the further development of friendships between Japan and Angaur.

The Government of Japan launched GGP in Palau in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities. The Embassy has worked on more than 60 GGP projects with educational institutions and state governments as well as non-profit organizations in Palau.
