Japan funds upgraded water system for Tonga Village

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, December 21, 2016) – An upgraded water supply system was handed to Nukuleka village on eastern Tongatapu on Tuesday, December 20 enabling its 250 residents to access a reliable water supply system. [restrict]

Th system is a gift from the Government of Japan, financed with a USD$54,633 grant under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects. It replaces an old water tank installed in the 1990s. In 2015, the water tank and stand was destroyed by strong wind, while other materials deteriorated.

The Japanese Ambassador HE Mr Yukio Numata said this new project installed a solar water pump unit, two pump house, one 5000 gallon water tank and stand.

“Nukuleka has access to a reliable, sustainable and safe water supply. I hope you will continue with your good effort not only to make sure that the system GGPinstalled is well kept and preserved so that generations can enjoy the opportunities you have today.”

The village’s main pipe system had initially been upgraded in a GGP project in 2006.

He was pleased that Japan was able to assist Nukuleka again, after their water tank facility was destroyed in 2015.

Hon. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa the Minister for Police thanked the people and the Government of Japan for the generous assistance.

“The people of Nukuleka will now enjoy good sanitation and good quality of life.”

Nukuleka’s Village Water Committee headed by town officer Sitiveni Fe’ao sought Japan’s assistance for this project. [/restrict]
