November 20, 2017 (Koror, Palau) Palau national government and semi-autonomous government agencies employees will be enjoying a 4-day weekend starting this Thanksgiving Day on November 23rd. For national government employees, that is further extended by half a day, as November 22nd is only half work day and the rest would be employee recognition event. [restrict]
President Remengesau Jr. on November 8, signed Senate bill 10-41,SD2,HD2 into law which designated fourth Friday of November as Family Day. This means that every Friday after Thanksgiving Day would be national holiday.
In his statement, Remengesau expressed that although he had some reservations due to the cost this holiday would impose on government, he felt that it is important to allow families opportunities for more quality time.
“I will ask OEK to look at some other holidays we have on the calendar that may not be as significant that we can remove,” he added.
Government civil service requires double pay for national holidays and so for employees that cannot be off work such as the police, doctors, nurses and others that provide critical services, they will be paid double their rates when working during legal holidays.
“My signing of this bill into law, we are taking positive steps together toward a happier nation where our citizens are given time to relax and embrace family,” stated Remengesau. [/restrict]
