German Parliament member visits Palau for the first time

German Parliamentarian Ulrich Lechte during his visit in Palau in August.

A member of the German Parliament had visited Palau for a three-day engagement with local government officials last week, making him the first German parliamentarian to have visited the country.

German Parliament member Ulrich Lechte, who is also a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said that his visit was in response to State Minister Faustina Rehuher-Marugg’s invitation during their meeting in Berlin, Germany in June this year.

Lechte said that the visit is mainly to meet local officials and see how Germany could further its diplomatic relationship with Palau. Prior to his stay in Palau, Lechte also visited Taiwan as part of his two-week engagements in Pacific region. He then left to Australia on Friday, August 9.

Lechte met with Palauan lawmakers and cabinet officials and had the chance to learn about Palau’s government system and visit some famous sites.

The German official said that discussions on establishing relationships between Palau’s 16 states and Germany’s 16 states was also brought up with one of the governors he met here.

“I am really happy that I made the decision to visit Palau and see your beautiful place,” Lechte said. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
