July 18, 2017 (Washington D.C.) U.S. House of Representatives passed National Defense Authorization Act of FY 2018 to Senate for action on July 14, 2017. The bill contained a provision authorizing $123.0 million to pay for the United States financial obligation under the Compact of Free Association with Palau. [restrict]

The provision which was taken out of the earlier version due to concerns over transferring funds from Defense to Interior was restored and adopted by the House after urging from Trump Administration.

“Failure to approve the CRA could imperil ongoing national security initiatives with the Republic of Palau and destabilize United States access and influence in a region that is increasingly contested by China,” stated Trump Administration on the funding for the Palau Compact.

It is reported that Senate Armed Services Committee chaired by Senator John McCain had approved the Palau Compact language. The bill was received by U.S. Senate on July 18th, read and placed on its general calendar.  [/restrict]
