April 25, 2017 (Koror, Palau) The handover ceremony of new patrol boat “Euatel” by the Nippon Foundation to the Republic of Palau will take place today at the Palau International Coral Reef Center.
This is third in the series of patrol boats of this size donated by The Nippon Foundation to Palau. Kabekl M’tal was donated in 2012 and Bul was donated in 2014. This third boat, Euatel has a newly installed rubber fender that will allow it to absorb impact between boats when pursuing illegal fishing vessels. [restrict]
Training for the patrol boat is expected to go smoothly due to Division of Marine Law Enforcement (DMLE) having had these types of boats since 2012.
In 2015, Republic of Palau and Nippon Foundation exchanged memorandum of understanding (MOU) in which they agreed to work together on areas of Coast Guard Capability Enhancement, Protection of the Environment and Eco-conscious Tourism.
Last year, thru a trilateral meeting, The Nippon Foundation, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the government of the Republic of Palau strengthened and added new provisions to the MOU to include a new 40 meter-type Patrol vessel, assistance for crew employment and training, a new Administration Building and a smaller patrol boat “Euatel”. The financial value of this package is about $70 million dollars.
“Euatel” will help reinforce the coast guard capability of Palau. Construction of the new berth for the new patrol boat and the new administration building commenced January of this year. [/restrict]
