December 2016 arrivals down by 15 percent
January 16, 2017 (Koror,Palau)- Tourist arrivals in Palau dropped 15 percent in 2016, mostly due to airlines suspending charter flights, and problems resulting from the near-historic drought.
According to the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA) visitors’ arrival for December 2016, there were 138,408 total arrivals in 2016 compared to 161,931 in 2015. [restrict]
For the month of December 2016, visitor arrivals to Palau totaled 9,872 representing a decrease of 2,707 or 21 percent compared to same month in 2015 with 12,579 visitor arrivals.
Visitors from People’s Republic of China (PRC) continue to be the biggest sourcing market with a market share of 38.44 percent of total arrivals.
In 2016, PRC tourists posted arrivals of 64,990 compared to the historic 87,058 in 2015, a 25 percent decrease.
Japan is second with 2,794 arrivals in December 2016 represent a decreased of 499 or 15.15 percent compared to same month last year with 3,293 arrivals.
For 2016, total arrivals from Japan were 29.238. In 2015 there were 31, 016 arrivals.
ROC (Taiwan) with 790 arrivals in December 2016 compared to December 2015, it decreased by 171.
For 2016, Taiwan arrivals were 12,441 while last year were 12,327.
Total Europe including Russia with 491 arrivals in December represent an increase of 87 or 21.53 percent compared to December 2015 with 404 arrivals.
Although most markets decrease in 2016, the European market actually registered a increase in 2015.
The report also said that factors affecting the tourism in 2016 were the decrease in the population of jellies in the famous Jellyfish Lake, the China news about ban on tourism to Palau shows an effect on Chinese visitors.
