A treasure in Kumamoto

A lively lady of 94 years (left) who proudly announced her age, shared a secret to a long and healthy life, “less food, less drink, everything in moderation.” With her in the photo is Island Times Publisher and Editor Leilani Reklai.

KUMAMOTO, Japan — Sometimes treasures are not found in heavy vaults or underground beneath the sign marked with an X.  Sometimes a treasure walks up to you in the middle of an historic street in, Kumamoto and gives you a blessing.

A lively lady of 94 years who proudly announced her age, shared a secret to a long and healthy life, “less food, less drink, everything in moderation”.

Doing kicks and steps to show her exceptional health, she dished her little cart with special tools and clothing she makes for her special friends and walked spritely to a nearby shrine.

With a face barely marked for her age, and with obvious strength and resilience, she embodied the spirit of this ancient town of Kumamoto that had withstood conflicts, civil war and natural disasters to rise proudly.

Indeed, a treasure is more than a beautiful ancient castle and rich history, it’s the lovely people of the Kumamoto. (L.N. Reklai)
