SUVA, 12 JUNE 2017 (FBC NEWS)—Over the past six years, close to two hundred children who were engaged in some form of child labour in Fiji have been placed back in schools. [restrict]
The Labour Ministry established a Child Labour Unit in 2011 and since then they have managed to pull out 193 children who were working.
Minister for Women, Mereseini Vuniwaqa, says a child’s rightful place is in school and child labour takes away these very rights of children.
“We need to ensure as parents and guardians that we ourselves do not harm our children’s future by putting them in employment instead of education by asking them to earn a wage while we take rest nor by abusing them instead of nurturing them.”
Following two rapid assessments in 2009 and 2015 in Fiji, the International Labour Organisation believes more effort needs to be placed to eradicate all forms of child labour.
Today marks World Day against Child Labour and this year’s focus is on the impact of conflicts and disasters on the children…..PACNEWS
